Children's Book Week 2014!

This week marks the 95th anniversary of Children's Book Week! On May 12-18, 2014, celebrate a love of books and reading in your home and community!

"Cover to Cover, Coast to Coast"

Children's Book Week originated in the belief that children's books and literacy are life-changers (here, here!). Established in 1919, Children's Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, commemorative events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes -- wherever young readers and books connect! Children's Book Week is administered by Every Child A Reader, a 501(c)(3) literacy organization dedicated to instilling a lifelong love of reading in children. The Children's Book Council, the national non-profit trade association for children's book publishers, is an anchor sponsor.

In honor of CBW 2014, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Let us know what you and your little one are reading on our Facebook Page. We'll be posting CBW related links and questions all week!

Chudney Ross, Owner of Books and Cookies, gave us her answers this Mother's Day:

What were your favorite books growing up?

I always loved (and still do love) anything by Eric Carle. The simple stories and artwork always drew me in. I also loved Eloise, Madeline and The Lonely Doll. I’m such a girly-girl! As I got older, I was a huge fan of anything by Beverly Cleary or Judy Blume.

What were some of the first books you and your baby shared?

Callaway [started with a lot of] singing and talking through our daily activities. Babies are like sponges taking in everything we say and becoming familiar with words and the sound of our voices. These are the early building blocks of literacy. For Callaway’s book basket, my favorites were Indestructibles because she could grasp, chew and slobber on them- they won’t rip or give paper cuts and they can be washed without damaging the pages. I love the multi-cultural artwork and that they have no words, so I am free to make up my own stories. Now Callaway is 1 1/2, and we love big board books with lots to look at and sing about like I Like Myself, as well as interactive picture books like Tap the Magic Tree.

What is your favorite place to unwind with a book and your little one?

I have the most amazing glider chair which looks out my window. I love to read, snuggle with Callaway, nap, pretty much do everything in that chair and at sunset or sunrise I can see the most beautiful colors in the sky over the ocean.

What were your favorite children's books growing up? What are you reading to your child now? What is your favorite place to unwind with a book for just you, or you and your little one?

Inspiring a love of books and reading is essential at all stages of growth, from babies to big kids. Encourage your child to READ by finding books they enjoy and connect with. Let them choose and get their hands on many different titles, then lead by example! Set aside time to together or alongside on another, and talk about about what you read. We encourage you to make this week a book-focused one for both you and your child!

Enjoy Children's Book Week 2014!
